News 1/18/05: Jack started a gymnastics class last week, which is a real riot. The kids are awesome and are quite entertaining to watch. He loves it. Jack learned his phone number at Debbie's this week and just seems like such a big boy all of a sudden. He is getting a pretty good sense of humor and loves to cut up with you. His favorite thing is when you tell him "don't smile," and of course he smiles, and you have to act REALLY exasperated and start telling him things like, "That does it -- you are grounded from sleep for the rest of the week!" Or from using his feet or breathing or opening his eyes or something else absurd. He just goes into fits of giggles. He's a very good and protective big brother to Cora so far. His favorite new old show is Pee-Wee's Playhouse, which just came out on DVD and is actually fun for us to watch together. He dropped the "Spicer" from his last name recently -- as suddenly as he assumed it in the first place -- and becomes deeply annoyed if you use that name. Actually, he prefers to be called "Metroid" or "Freudian Flats" (I know!), both from video games. Ay. This too shall pass... He's been a little sick this winter but not as bad as Cora. It's definitely a step up from the year he had an ear infection from October through April. He enjoys typing on the computer and trying to figure out how to spell words. ("Look, Mom! I spelled 'DVD'!") He is a sucker for frozen waffles, black beans, quesadillas and Smarties, though not together. We open a few rolls of Smarties to let him work through his math with them, which cancels out the sugar. He's big on "Chutes and Ladders" and "Memory" and puzzles and loves to play "Name That Tune" before bed. He has a couple of CDs he really likes, too: Yellow Submarine and They Might Be Giants' No, which we also like. It's fun because it's geared toward kids, but is squirrelly and funny for adults and leads to your four-year-old telling you that, indeed, he does NOT want to accompany you to Target, because he is "throwing off (his) chains of servitude." He's a great kid and this is a great age. Kindergarten is on the horizon and it makes us so sad to think about! 7/23/04: Jack is having a fun little summer, going places and learning things, like how to swim...sort of. He's enrolled in a swim class, which he loved for the first five lessons. He rebelled at the last one, though, so we'll have to see how the final week goes. Those kids are pretty darn cute in the water with their little floaties and noodles. 6/26/04:
Why yes, yes, it has been almost five months since we last posted, now that you mention it. We are busy bees at Casa Wilken. We did continue to take pictures, but the posting of them online is another story. Jack still rocks. He commemorated his fourth birthday a few weeks ago with four vaccinations at the doctor! Way to go! (He's in the 75th percentile on both weight and height, so I guess that means he's not the only stick-child around.) When he grows up, Jack wants to be a purveyor of donuts. Actually, he only wants to do that in the morning. During the day he wants to develop video games. He does, in fact, get outside on occasion and enjoys the new tire swing at Grandma and Grandpa's house "in the forest," as well as the spanking-new swingset in the park two doors down from us. If anyone has tips on motivating him to learn to swing by himself, please let us know. He starts swim lessons in July, so that should be fun. He mostly spends his off-time hanging with Cora, aka Little Hummy. He named her this months ago and it stuck. He also has christened himself "Jack Henry Wilken Spicer." We're not sure why. We know no one with the last name "Spicer." He's very funny these days. We're going to miss Jack At Three, but Jack At Four has been just as awesome.
